Hey Ya'll,

I'm working on playing this famous piece by Rachmaninoff and it is so beautiful that I wanted to share it with you.

Accept from this piece being one of the most touching pieces I've played in a long time, Richter, the perofmer is an amazing player.

but I hope I can learn something from him :)

So Every student has a teacher, and that teacher has a student. And even when you're a teacher you're studying from your student...

Gosh...

Anyway, here it is, Rachmaninoff Prelude Op.23 No.5

Learn to play fast
by: Jeremy St. James

Hi, this is Jeremy. I am in the process of practicing this piece now after about 15 years off from offical lessons.

I'm 32 now and don't get time to practice much but when I do, I work on this one. I can play some parts perfect up to speed and some not so much. I think that the key in this particular song is training your fingers if not already done to know the chord structure while just playing on a desktop or some flat surface.
It's odd, I practiced the faster 8 finger chord parts while at my desk. Once you know where your fingers and wrist muscles should be on this powerful piece, you will be able to if you sit right, keep your elbows above the keyboard and have no more wiggle room when you "strike a pose" with your fingers.

I mean that too. Much of this song has to do with very strong hands, wrists and fingers, let alone memory of the structure. Practice it slow without mistakes other than a slow tempo. You'll soon find that you can play out the famous fast lines of this at your desk and your fingers will just bounce to the position they should be in for this and many others like it.

Try it to see what I mean, it's all about wrist, finger and muscle strength in this piece although the nuances are a must too.

It's definitely a workout, I can tell you that but I can pay these chords without a keyboard in front of me and when I move my frozen in time hands to my keyboards next to me, it's a prefect match with the placement on the keys.

Learn to memorize the muscles and exact fingering and don't stray, then see if you can do that without a keyboard in front of you. You should be able to if you know what I mean, your fingers will just snap to the right place and be frozen there.

That's what they need to do for this song since there are many large chords. I hope you have big hands! Cheers....

Love this song
by: Anonymous

Hi,
just wanted to say that I love this piano piece, and I'm trying my very best to play it, but...
I'm stuck! The piece is so fast, that no matter how often I practice I just can't get it to proper speed. Any advice on what strategies I can use to speed things up? I've memorized the whole first page, but I'm pretty slow at playing it.
It would be such a great song to be able to play

"Thank you for your lessons. I took piano lessons as a kid, and I've dabbled off and on for years. My music teacher taught me how to read music and hit all the notes, but I never felt like I was playing for real. I always felt like I was going through the motions, like a machine. Your lessons have changed that, so thanks."
