Simple Pop Chord Progression

by Ken
(Singapore)

This is a simple pop chord progression I learned at a beginner-level piano workshop a little more than a month ago. The workshop taught us grooves and inversions as well, so I sorta mixed things up a little and added an inversions here and a different groove there.

I also added a chord substitution (based on knowledge offered by Piano Play It!) on top of the two that the teacher taught the interested/little more advanced few :) I just hope I did it correctly...

Hope you like the video :)

Hi Ken,

The chord progression that you are playing is beautiful. You are playing gently with care and sensitivity. I can imagine a love song that is based on your chord progression; well done!

Chord substitution is a great technique to enrich the harmony and make the music a lot more interesting and full with imagination.

It is hard for me to know whether the substitution you made is correct or not, since I don't know what was the original chord progression.

However, I'll be able to check it if you send us the original chord progression and in addition your chord progression with the substitutions. By that I can compare between them and see what substitutions have you been using here.

I see that you began with these chords -

C -> G/B -> Am7 -> C/G -> F -> G -> C -> E ?

Please, continue writing this and the original chord progression too. I'm sure that other users of www.piano-play-it.com will be able to learn from your example.

I'd like to say a few words about the term "correct" in music. It is good and necessary to learn the "rules", but I advise you not to follow them always. Many compositions are "not correct" but sound beautiful. Some of the greatest composers and song writers broke the rules but still created a wonderful music. So, feel free to use other chords too.

Again, well done! Keep on playing and learning with passion.
