Advanced Piano Practice Techniques
by: Ido Ronen from www.piano-play-it.com

Hi Brian,

Professional pianists spend long hours practicing. They become concert pianists after working hard improving their piano playing for many years; They take professional teachers who know how to recognize their talent and use it to take them to a mastery level; speaking of talent, the truth is you do need to be naturally gifts in a way as well.

How do concert pianists practice? Do they simply play known compositions or do they play exercises as well? What kind of exercises do they practice? How many hours do they dedicate for practicing and how many for playing actual pieces?

There is not just one answer for each of the questions above. One pianist may practice 2 hours a day, while the other may spend 8 hours on the piano. One pianist may play exercises from a book by Hannon while the other may invent his own exercises. An other pianist may improve and maintain his piano technique by playing from the Well Tempered Clavier by Bach.

The secret is to find what's best for you. It takes years to develop your own method and you can change your routine from time to time.

It is important to say that every pianist has a different gift. Once may be amazingly talents on the techniqal level while the other has a unique way of interprating piano pieces in way that was never heard before.

There's a great book that contains a collection of interviews with concert pianists and famous piano teachers. You will see that their pointig at different methods. Each of the interviews reveals tips that may help you to develop your own practice routine.

Piano mastery by Harriette Brower and Jeffrey Johnson will also open your mind to other important aspects of music as well. I really recommend reading the book if you're curious about the life of concert pianists and how they achieve their goals.

Here is the book:

I hope this helps...

"Thank you for your lessons. I took piano lessons as a kid, and I've dabbled off and on for years. My music teacher taught me how to read music and hit all the notes, but I never felt like I was playing for real. I always felt like I was going through the motions, like a machine. Your lessons have changed that, so thanks."

Joshua White from U.S.A
