minor major seventh chords
by: Ido from www.piano-play-it.com

Hi Daisy,

The chord is a B minor, major seventh.

It has various symbols:

mM7, mΔ7, -Δ7, mM7, m/M7, m(M7), minmaj7.

All of these symbols mean exactly the same: a minor chord with an extra note which is placed a major seventh above the bass.

I'd like to explain the logic behind this for you

The first three notes of the chord - B, D , F# construct a B minor chord. The question is - what does the Bb do there?

First of all, I advise you to go to our piano chord section which explains everything you need to know about chords and their structure.

Regarding the added note-the Bb:
Well, actually it is more correct to refer to it as an A# instead of a Bb. (These are the same notes with different names).
Therefore, the notes of the chord are: B D F# and A#. This is a seventh chord because it is constructed of 4 notes which are positioned in thirds from each other. Click here to learn more about seventh chords.

Let's examine the Bm7 chord (I assume that you know what is its structure; if not, click here). It consists of these notes:
Bm7 = B D F# A.

The A is the seventh of the Bm7 chord, so in your case the A# is the major seventh of the same chord. This is why we call this chord - B D F# A.# - a minor, major seventh chord.

I hope that I have helped you, and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any more queries.
