Playing by Ear or Learn to Read Sheet Music?
by: Anonymous

Hey Darla,

Many students prefer to play the piano by ear. Reading sheet music requires learning many signs, so in many cases students learn new tunes much faster when doing it by ear.

Playing the piano by ear plays an important role in studying to play the piano. However, imagine you could read sheet music... there are so many beautiful pieces you could play by yourself.

There are even more benefits for learning to read music sheet. Read the answer to this question:
should I study piano theory or just play piano by ear?

As for your second question, we have the best piano chords page on the web.

You can find there basic piano chord lessons, chord theory that will help you to understand the logic behind this fascinating world, jazz chord lessons and more.

If you want to know how to play any chord, you may also use our chord finder on the top of the piano chords page.

I recommend you take our piano accompaniment course before memorizing all the chords.

There are so many chords that you may end up learning them for months without making music.
We are here to play music, so it is more important to know how to put the chords in a musical sequence than to memorize all of them.

It is the same thing as learning a new language. You can memorize thousands of words, but still, in order to speak the language, you need to know the grammar, or in other words how to combine the words so that you can be understood.

I wish you success in your efforts; if you need any more help please do not hesitate to contact us.

"Thank you for your lessons. I took piano lessons as a kid, and I've dabbled off and on for years. My music teacher taught me how to read music and hit all the notes, but I never felt like I was playing for real. I always felt like I was going through the motions, like a machine. Your lessons have changed that, so thanks."

Joshua White from U.S.A
