Suggestion on adding a groove
by: David from www.piano-play-it.com

Hi Aly,

That's very nice question.

Here's how I think you should add a groove to a song.

1. First learn to play the chord in blocks. So just practice on passing from on chord to the other smoothly at the beginning of every bar or if there two chords in a bar do that.

2. The next thing you should do is ask yourself what is the genre or the style of the song.

There are many style and genres in music like Rock, Pop, Funky, Bossanova, Swing and many more...

As time goes on we'll be adding here in Piano-play-it many song and tutorials with different syles of music where we will teach you also to play songs in different styles.

When you have recognized the style of the song I suggest you look for a rhytmic pattern that fits that song. A sort of mixture between the right hand and the left hand that will create the impression of a bossanova, swing and so on.

Let's take the swing for example, When you play a jazzy swingy song you'll be playing the walking bass in the left hand and breaks in the right hand.

The bossa nova however has a few very typical grooves between a bass that play the first and fifth notes of the chord.

If you play a pop song I suggest you visit our Piano Tutorials section and look for a song that has a groove that is similar to the song you're looking for.

However, I promise in time we'll enter this issue more deeply and I will give very specific answers.

I hope I helped you with your question. Let me know if you have further questions.
