Motivate the student
by: Eddie

Of course the boy wants your company, not the piano. Let's motivate the boy by giving him some real meat he can sink his fingers into.

There are some easy things to teach him that will make him sound pretty good after just a little practice. For example:

Have him learn a simple 12-bar boogie where his left pinky hits a bass C note then his right hand hits a C triad in root position; then left E bass then the C triad again, followed by G bass, the right triad. Continue with E bass, triad, C bass, triad. This is done witout pedal, of course, and the triads are simply played witout sustaining them.

He'll do that with F and G triads. The F will be fingered C-F-A, the G, D-G-B.

Simple fun things like this can change a child's tortuous practicing to happy playing. I've tons of simple ideas that sound great to a beginning student that "hide" the fact that he/she is actually learning technique and getting better without the "I hate practicing" attitude often associated with it.OCTOID

Make Music Fun
by: Karen

With students like this, I simply make it the goal to teach them to have fun with music.
He has the pentascales down, so teach him the three primary I, IV and V7 chords that go with the C scale.

From there you can teach him how to harmonize some songs.
I also bring out the fun duets everyone knows - The Knuckle Song, Chop Sticks and Heart and Soul.

The 50's chord progression from Heart and Soul can be used to teach beginning improvisation. Have fun making music together.
