Playing Vocals on Piano
by: Ido Ronen from www.piano-play-it.com

Hi Connor,

I'm not sure that I exactly understood your question, but let me try.

Did you mean that you have the chords for the left hand, and you would like to play the vocal part with the right hand, right?

I assume that you already have the melody part written and you can sing it, is that right?
In this case, you should sing the melody slowly, and try to find it with your right hand on the keyboard.

If you'd first need to find the melody by ear Click here to learn how to play melodies by ear.

For some people it is easy, and for others it's a little bit more difficult. However, practice makes perfect.

If your chord progression is not avant-garde (I mean if it is not weird), your melody probably consists of a scale that fits your chord progression.
Check out our piano theory lessons to learn about music scales, and you'll probably find that your melody contains the notes of one of them.

Sometimes, melodies may be static. In other words, they may contain many repetitions on the same notes. These songs can be beautiful when you sing them, but they will sound quite doll when you try to play the melody with your right hand.

Does your song belong to these kinds of songs?
For example, in Rap music, you'll find it impossible to play the vocal part with the right hand!

In Rock and Pop music you can also find many examples of songs in which the melody is quite static. Take the song One by U2 for example . A beautiful song, isn't it? Playing its vocal part with your right hand will insult this song and Bono!

Hey, wait a minute? I have an offer for you!
Record yourself with a camera, playing and singing your song. We'll help you to play the part of the vocal with your right hand. If it is a nice song we may put it on our website and make you famous since we have thousands of viewers every day.

If you ask us not to upload it however, we will simply give you a straight answer to your question.

I hope this helps

"Thank you for your lessons. I took piano lessons as a kid, and I've dabbled off and on for years. My music teacher taught me how to read music and hit all the notes, but I never felt like I was playing for real. I always felt like I was going through the motions, like a machine. Your lessons have changed that, so thanks."

Joshua White from U.S.A
