The answer to your question depends on some decisions you have to make.

First of all, you have to ask yourself what motivates you to play the piano.

Most of my students or not interested in becoming professional players. They play the piano purely for pleasure.

If you decide that you want to play the piano because you like these pop songs so much you can simply follow the piano tutorials on this website or find other tutorials, of songs that you like and that's completely cool.

There is a big advantage in playing piano by looking and imitating and that advantage is that you improve your musicality enormously.

However, if you decide that you want to be the best piano player you can get, or more so becoming a professional I'm afraid you'll have to practice playing classical music.

Music is a language. If you can only speak it you can grow only to a certain point. You must read and write as well.

Now, I'd like to say a few things on behalf of the classic music.

The classical music contains the core of what music is all about. Durig the going of time music has become more simple and square and therefore lost lots of the quality and imagination which is still fully presented in classical music which contains complexity and beauty you'll never be able to find in pop music.

The reason that classical music is so important for your development therefore, is because it will enrich your musical taste, musical knowledge and musical senses.

You know how people don't like things they can't understand? Maybe that's your relationship with classical music.
So If I were I'd give it a try.
I think it's important to keep you mind open to new things even if it's quite hard to get used on it at first. Knowing what you'll achieve which is the ability to appreciate the beauty in this genre is an incredible price to win.

To conclude, what I'm actually telling you is that it's up to you and to your needs and desire.
But in order to improve your playing level and to know you did your best for you musical sense you could earn a lot from playing classical music.

P.S

A good teacher could change your point of view instantly to liking something you never thought you would appreciate. Do you have one? :)

"Thank you for your lessons. I took piano lessons as a kid, and I've dabbled off and on for years. My music teacher taught me how to read music and hit all the notes, but I never felt like I was playing for real. I always felt like I was going through the motions, like a machine. Your lessons have changed that, so thanks."

Joshua White from U.S.A
