The Concept of Chord Piano
by: David from www.piano-play-it.com

In order to play chord piano one has to be familiar with chord construction. In my Piano tutorials I actually demonstrate how to play each and every chord.

Since there are so many chords I wouldn't try to learn all of them at once. Instead I would work on it more practically.

I'll choose a song and try to construct the chords that are present in this song. "Let It Be" for example, has only five chords in it (C, G, Am, F C/E).

I would first learn how to play the chord by ear. The information on how to construct these chords is founded in The Piano Chords section.

Next, it's best to broaden your knowledge on music theory and understand how these chords are constructed logically.

The next step would be limiting your range on the piano in order to move from one chord to the other smoothly by forming close inversions.
Here's a piano lesson about piano chord inversions.

Now you should be able to play the right hand by chords. Next add the bass in the left hand and look for handy fingerings in order to pass from one note to the other smoothly as well.

Then find a groove that fits the songs style. In my Piano tutorials I demonstrate how to play a few grooves. We will provide more grooves in Piano Play It in the future so stay tuned.

When you feel happy with your result you can move to the next song and repeat the same process.
Before you'll know it you'll play many songs and be familiar with plenty of chords and grooves.

When we accompany someone or ourselves we indeed never play the melodic line along (one by one). It often clashes with the singer and doesn't really support him. When we're accompanying we are a service to the leading voice.

However it's important to include the note of the melody (which is the note a singer sings at the moment the chord is pressed) since this is a really terrific way to support the singer.

That's basically the concept behind playing piano by chords. If you have further questions don't hesitate to ask them. I hope this helped. If you'll post a video of yourself on PianoTube I promise to give you some usefull tips on how to improve you piano chord playing.
