Voice Leading within a Chord

Thanks a lot, David. Your explanation really helped me understand how to play these particular notes.

Melody and Accompaniment on the same staff.
by: David from www.piano-play-it.com

Hi Emma,

What you see here is a case where both the melody and the accompaniment are written on the same staff (The Upper Staff probably).

You should start playing the F chord in the beginning (A-F-C) and move from A to G (5th finger going to 4th) in the down beat (1st beat) of the next bar WHILE HOLDING THE F AND C NOTES with your 3rd and 5th fingers.

In the next eighth notes hold the G note with your 4th finger while lifting the C and F notes and playing them again.

The A note going to G is the melody
and the repeating F-C notes are part of the chord written with a certain groove.

This is a classic case that shows you how to combine the melody, the chords and the groove in one hand.

Did you get it? If not don't hesitate to ask me further questions and I'll do my best two answers.

Good Luck!

David

"Thank you for your lessons. I took piano lessons as a kid, and I've dabbled off and on for years. My music teacher taught me how to read music and hit all the notes, but I never felt like I was playing for real. I always felt like I was going through the motions, like a machine. Your lessons have changed that, so thanks."

Joshua White from U.S.A
