Playing Slash Chords
by: Ido Ronen from www.piano-play-it.com

Hello Reverend White,

I have arranged the first 4 bars of the song. Read and play this:

Slash Chords with melody.

This is a beautiful song, and one of the reasons is the harmony which includes Slash chords. We have a great lesson about the slash chords, and I recommend you to read it.

Your question actually is - how to play the slash chords with a melody?

Well, when you play a melody with a slash chord there are two things that can not be changed: the melody and the bass.
The melody is played by the right hand and the bass is played by the left hand.

The next step is figuring out the notes of the chord. When you know which notes make up the chord, you should find a way to play them in one of the following alternatives:

1. Playing all of the notes of the chord with the right hand.
2. Playing all of the notes of the chord with the left hand.
3. Splitting the chord in a way that the right hand will play some of the notes of the chord and the left hand will play the rest of them.

In the example above, you can see G/C and F/C at the second bar.
In G/C the notes are G B D and the bass is C.
I have chosen the third option here - splitting the chord between the hands:
The right hand plays B and D (D is the note of the melody but it functions here as a note of the chord). The left hand plays G (which is a note from the chord) and C (which is the bass).

The same happens in the next chord - chord F/C: the notes of the chord split between the hands.

Of course, there are many more possibilities to play these chords.

I hope that I have helped you,

Ido from www.piano-play-it.com

"Thank you for your lessons. I took piano lessons as a kid, and I've dabbled off and on for years. My music teacher taught me how to read music and hit all the notes, but I never felt like I was playing for real. I always felt like I was going through the motions, like a machine. Your lessons have changed that, so thanks."
