A guitarist who strats playing the piano...
by: Ido from www.piano-play-it.com

Hi Fervanus,

I am happy that you are enjoying playing both the guitar and the piano.
You have a great advantage knowing how to play the guitar and this will help you a lot while learning to play the piano.

In order to improve your piano playing I recommend you to focus on the following skills:
1. Playing chords on the piano.
2. Reading the bass clef, and piano music sheets.
3. Improving coordination and practicing various piano techniques.

1. Chords: Playing chords on the guitar is easier than playing them on the piano. There are only few versions for each chord on the guitar, while in the piano there are dozens of versions for each chord.
Read the page about chord inversions, and watch the tutorial that explains how to invert chords. After that watch our piano tutorials for dozens of popular songs and you will learn how to apply the chord inversions into real songs.

2. Reading: Guitarists usually know how to read chord symbols, treble clef and tablature format. Some can read only the tablature format since they are easier to follow.
In order to read piano sheets however you should be able to read note on the bass clef as well along with hord symbols.

First, I advise you to play Pieces for the Bass Clef (For the left hand) and Beginner Pieces for the Grand Staff (For both hands). After that you may find many more free piano music sheets which will improve your ability to read piano music.

3. Piano techniques: As a guitar player you probably know that it is important to improve your technique. We have a lot of piano exercises and we explain how to practice them.
A special skill that you should work on is coordination - in the guitar you develop different coordination skills from in the piano. On the piano in many cases you play the melody with one hand and the accompaniment with the other, while in the guitar you usually play accompaniment or a melody line. In order to improve this special skill for piano, practice The Best Piano Exercises for Beginners --> Coordination Exercises .

That's a lot of work to do isn't it?
Take one subject each time and practice it slowly.
