How to spot the Music Beats in a piece
by: David from www.piano-play-it.com

Hi Jerry,

To begin with check this page about rhythm where I explain how the conecpt of rhythm works and I demonstrate where the beats are found in two pieces with different time signatures.

In order to spot the music beats in a piece you basically have to understand that music is based on counting beats, and every four or three beats (Sometimes six or five but not so often) are divided by a bar line.

The reason the beats are grouped that way is that the first beat of every group is the most heavy/important one.

Try to listen to a few songs and fill it in the music.

So, if you're confused about locating the beats try to clap with one hand on your knee while listening to a song, then try to figure out which beat is the most accented one.

You'll clap this beat a bit harder every four or three times.

About playing piano by ear. The fact you have learned to play a few chords by ear says you have potential to learn. That helps of course.

The big difference between the organ and the piano is that when you play the organ you can't really control the sound you're creating. It's all up to the sound of the instrument, while when you're playing piano there are thousands of ways to press on a key and express a todally different feeling.

Here's where you can see the differences between an organ and a keyboard.

Bottom line, if you'd like to play the piano, you already know a few chords (They're the same) but you have to start learning Piano Technique from scratch.

About filling the chord in songs...
In these piano tutorials here you'll find many ways to fill in the chords as you call it. See especially This piano tutorial "All Out of Love" where I show how to play arpeggios with the right hand.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!!

"Thank you for your lessons. I took piano lessons as a kid, and I've dabbled off and on for years. My music teacher taught me how to read music and hit all the notes, but I never felt like I was playing for real. I always felt like I was going through the motions, like a machine. Your lessons have changed that, so thanks."

Joshua White from U.S.A
