How to Read Piano Notes on the Bass Staff (Under Middle C)![]() Until this moment we've learned to read piano notes in treble clef which is used for tones above middle C (for a reminder click here.) Today we will learn to read notes under middle C. In order to do that we use the bass clef. The Bass Clef Take a look at it. It reminds of letter F. Do you see it? The bass treble has two dots. The dots point at the second line from above. On that line we will find the F under middle C in the keyboard. Just like treble clef we can find the other keys in the bass clef by moving up and down.
Did you notice that the stem of the lower C note has changed direction? Here's why... The Direction of the Notes Stems The notes have stems. The stems have a direction. When they are set above or on the middle line their stems pointing doing.
